Youth Homelessness

Special Homelessness Services (for Youth)

Ungooroo – through the support of the NSW Government – delivers services, programs and initiatives that support young people who are homeless or at risk of becoming homeless.

At Ungooroo we understand that homelessness is a complex situation stemming from a range of underlying issues. Reducing and eliminating homelessness requires strategy development, service design and planning, and the delivery of strengths-based, client-focused services. We provide pathways for our youth to build their skills to address their homelessness. We do this in a supportive environment so that our youth can reach their full potential. Through our work we empower young people with choices and options so they maintain a stable living environment. This in turn provides the foundation for:
improved physical and mental health
increased participation rates in the workforce and in community life
and in improved general wellbeing.

The Special Homelessness Service (SHS) program is the NSW government’s primary response to homelessness and is administered by Family and Community Services. With a 17% increase in the number of Aboriginal people who were homeless, this initiative is a critical part of the over-all wellbeing of our Indigenous population (Australian Bureau of Statistics census figures 2011).

Our services are for youth aged between 12 and 25 years who identify as Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander and are homeless (or at risk of homelessness). We provide:
early intervention to stay at home or maintain a stable tenancy
outreach, casework, support & advocacy
living skills workshops
referrals to specialist services
referrals and access to bulk billing GP services
education and employment support
access to transitional accommodation
access to private rental market
access to HNSW products and services
support with services such as Centrelink and Job Network providers
brokerage
