Youth Homelessness

Specialist Homelessness Services for Youth

With the support of the NSW Government, Ungooroo Aboriginal Corporation delivers services, programs and initiatives to support young people (between the ages of 12-25) who are homeless or at risk of becoming homeless.

The Specialist Homelessness Service (SHS) program is the NSW government’s primary response to homelessness and is administered by Family and Community Services. With a 17% increase in the number of Aboriginal people who were homeless, this initiative is a critical part of the overall well being of our Indigenous population (Australian Bureau of Statistics, Census figures, 2011).

Specialist homelessness services work in partnership with housing providers and other service providers, such as those delivering drug and alcohol, domestic violence and mental health programs. These collaborations between services help people at risk of becoming homeless to stay housed and those already homeless to find and keep a home.

Ungoooroo Specialist Homelessness Services

At Ungooroo, we understand that homelessness is a complex situation stemming from a range of underlying issues. Reducing and eliminating homelessness requires strategy development, service design and planning, and the delivery of strengths-based, client-focused services.
Our services are for youth aged between 12 and 25 years who identify as Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander and are homeless (or at risk of homelessness). We provide:
Early intervention to stay at home or maintain a stable tenancy
Outreach, casework, support & advocacy
Living skills workshops
Referrals to specialist services
Referrals and access to bulk billing GP services
Education and employment support
Access to transitional accommodation
Access to private rental market
Access to HNSW products and services
Support with services such as Centrelink and Job Network providers
We provide pathways for our youth to build their skills to address their homelessness. We do this in a supportive environment so that our youth can reach their full potential. Through our work we empower young people with choices and options so they maintain a stable living environment. This in turn provides the foundation for:
Improved physical and mental health
Increased participation rates in the workforce and in community life
Improved general well being

If you are a young person aged between 12 to 25 years, who identifies as Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander and are homeless or at risk of homelessness, you can contact us directly. Call (02) 6571 5111 and ask to speak to one of our SHS officers.

Alternatively, if you know a young person who fits the eligibility criteria, you can make the referral on their behalf. Referrals can be made by the young person’s parents, carers, schools, GP, members of the community, or other support services and agencies.
