Social Services

Overview of our Social Services Programs

Ungooroo provides social services that complement our extensive range of health, employment and business services. As part of our holistic approach to the Indigenous community in the Upper Hunter Valley, we provide:
Special Homelessness Services (SHS) program
NDIS services (approved provider).

SHS Program

Homelessness is complex situation often borne out of a range of multi-faceted issues. It requires strategy development, service design and planning, and the provision of homelessness services. The NSW government funds and supports non-government organisations such as Ungooroo to deliver services, programs and initiatives that will support people who are homeless or at risk of becoming homeless across NSW. Ungooroo’s SHS program focusses on young people (between 12 and 25 years) and aims to reducing the number of people who are homeless or facing unstable accommodation or housing in NSW.

At Ungooroo we know that a stable living environment can be the foundation for:
improving physical and mental health
increasing participation rates in the workforce and in community life
and in improving a person’s general wellbeing.

The SHS program is the NSW government’s primary response to homelessness and is administered through Family and Community Services. Its aim is to support people who are experiencing homelessness or at risk of homelessness. With a 17% increase in the number of Aboriginal people who were homeless, this initiative is a critical part of the over-all wellbeing of our Indigenous population (Australian Bureau of Statistics census figures 2011).

NDIS Services

Ungooroo, in partnership with the Local Area Coordination team (St Vinnies) can support our Indigenous community through the NDIS journey. For some the complexity of their needs can make the NDIS process seem complex and difficult. For others it may just be a small amount of support that can make all the difference. Regardless of your needs, we’re here to do what we can to help.
